Ely creates this sense of immortality and that it will at some point reach humans. I think that Ely is also an allusion to the bible and what the apocalypse means, he goes against all the bibles thoughts. The fact that Ely doesn't have a name it makes him uncertain as well as everything he thinks and says, it makes the things that he says that he connects to the bible un certain as well.
McCarthy is giving the reader the option to choose to believe or not what Ely says throughout the book. May 15, AM. One of the most profound characters in The Road is Ely.
Father and Son meet Ely when they see him traveling along the road in front of them. The father agrees to feed him, and although in plain sight it might look like Ely is of no importance he in my opinion is extremely important.
Much about his character and importance to the novel can be derived from his name. Ely is short for Elijah, which can be seen as an allusion to the old testament in which Elijah is described as a prophet which has the ability to speak so much truth it feels like it burns. Considering Ely as the prophet in the bible we can see a contrast between ideologies.
In the novel we can see how the world seems to have been abandoned by him. In my opinion Ely serves to represent the change of faith and the religious path of humans as they lose hope in humanity, he is a reminder that in the world McCarthy painted, God used to exist. Ely is now dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral, a legacy left by William I. The invading Normans undoubtedly used their building skills to demonstrate their power over the local population.
With its intricately carved stonework, Ely Cathedral took almost years to complete. In Cromwell inherited a large estate in the area from his uncle Sir Thomas Steward. He became the local tax collector, a man of wealth and great standing within certain sectors of the community. Not perhaps the greatest admirer of the local Catholic clergy, he was responsible for closing the cathedral for approximately 10 years following a disagreement with them.
He did however put the building to good use during this period, as stabling for his cavalry horses. Due to its historic isolation, Ely has remained small.
Stroll along the riverside in the summer there are daily boat trips to Cambridge or visit the tearooms and antique shops which nestle cosily in the narrow streets of this ancient city. Twice weekly markets are held in Ely; a general produce market on Thursdays and a Crafts and Collectibles market on Saturdays.
