When was bartholomew the apostle born

As I wrote, Bartholomew was introduced to Christ by his friend, Philipp. Can anything good come from there? You will see greater things than that. Bartholomew would also later see Jesus after He was resurrected John Other than these accounts of Bartholomew or Nathanael, we have precious little mention of him in the gospels and the only accounts of him are mentioned in the Gospel of John.

According to Ecclesiastical History it was after the ascension that Bartholomew, like the majority of the other apostles, went on missionary trips but Bartholomew went much further than most of the other apostles, traveling to India like the Apostle Thomas did. He was said to have left behind a hand-written copy of the Gospel of Matthew which is interesting since that gospel is written primarily to the Jews and contains at least seven different Old Testament prophecies written specifically about Jesus.

Popular church tradition says that after he went to India, he traveled to Armenia. It is believed that it was while he was establishing Christianity in Armenia that he was martyred.

Most biblical scholars agree that he was basically flayed to death by whips, where he was literally torn to shreds. The exception was the Apostle John who is believed to have died of natural causes age.

Bartholomew or Nathanael, as one of the twelve apostles, went out into the world to preach the gospel to the whole world, each going out in different directions. Since the apostles went to various places, we might wonder if they had all discussed this before they left and decided where each of them should go.

It would make no sense for several of them to go to the same places so it is believed that they each went into different parts of the civilized world and all but the Apostle John, died a martyrs death. The order was given to take the silver statue of St Bartholomew and melt it down. The statue was weighed, and it was found to be only several ounces.

It was returned to its place in the Cathedral of Lipari. In reality, the statue is made from many pounds of silver and it is considered a miracle that it was not melted down. Statue of St. Bartholomew, with his own skin, by Marco d'Agrate , Duomo di Milano.

In works of art Bartholomew is often represented with a large knife, or, as in Michelangelo 's Last Judgment , with his own skin hanging over his arm. Tradition in Armenia holds that in Caucasic Albania he was flayed alive and then crucified upside down for refusing to worship pagan gods.

This fate led to him being adopted as the patron saint of tanners. St Bartholomew plays a part in Francis Bacon 's Utopian tale The New Atlantis , about a mythical isolated land Bensalem populated by a people dedicated to reason and natural philosophy. Some twenty years after the ascension of Christ the people of Bensalem found an ark floating off their shore. The ark contained a letter as well as the books of the Old and New Testaments.

The letter was from Bartholomew the Apostle and declared that an angel told him to set the ark and its contents afloat. Thus the scientists of Bensalem received the revelation of the Word of God.
