Why cramping during 2ww

You're also likely to have many questions. Are cramps after an embryo transfer a good sign or a bad sign? What about spotting? Are there IVF early pregnancy symptoms to know about? We've got answers to these common questions. Cramping can strike fear in the hearts of some IVFers and hope in others. Fear, because they worry this is a sign their period is coming or that maybe the cycle has failed.

Hope, because maybe cramps are a sign of implantation and maybe they're pregnant. Here's the good and bad news: mild cramping and pelvic discomfort are very common. Cramping during IVF shouldn't be seen as a sign of your coming period nor as a possible sign of pregnancy. The medications and procedures of IVF make quite an impact on your reproductive organs.

If you get pregnant, the pelvic discomfort may go on for a few more weeks. Also, the egg retrieval procedure and the later embryo transfer can cause slight cramping in the days immediately after. If the cramping is especially severe, accompanied by heavy bleeding or feelings of nausea, contact your doctor right away.

These may be signs of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome OHSS or ovarian torsion. These conditions require immediate medical attention.

Light spotting is relatively common. According to available research, it occurs in 7 to 42 percent of IVF cycles. You may experience light spotting after egg retrieval, after embryo transfer, or later in your luteal phase. While you should report any unusual bleeding to your doctor, spotting alone is not necessarily a good or bad sign.

Spotting that occurs halfway through the two-week wait is sometimes attributed to what's known as implantation spotting. Implantation spotting is said to be caused by an embryo implanting itself into the uterine wall. Another possible cause for spotting is progesterone supplementation via vaginal suppositories. Vaginal progesterone suppositories can cause the cervix to be extra sensitive. If you have sexual intercourse, you may experience light spotting, but this is nothing to worry about.

If you're bleeding heavily, or if you're experiencing pain or severe cramps, contact your doctor right away. Common practice has been to ask couples to abstain from sexual intercourse during part or all of an IVF treatment cycle. Some doctors are concerned that sex may lead to infection or interfere with embryo implantation.

However, other doctors think it's fine and even recommend sex after IVF. As always, consult with your doctor if you're unsure if you should engage in sexual intercourse.

A study in Australia decided to look at whether sexual intercourse is harmful to the IVF process. Not only did they find that sexual intercourse wasn't harmful, they found that couples who had sex around the time of embryo transfer had higher viability rates at 6 to 8 weeks post transfer.

The study showed that semen seems to play a positive role in embryo implantation and development. Prescribing bed rest to women after embryo transfer was once common practice. Bed rest suggestions ranged from lying down for just 10 minutes post transfer to five days of convalescing. Despite how common the practice was, research has found no benefit to bed rest during the two-week wait. A number of studies found possible negative effects of bed rest.

The women who got up right away after embryo transfer had higher pregnancy rates and lower miscarriage rates. If your doctor has prescribed bed rest, discuss whether he or she really believes this is necessary. Is she just prescribing it to help you feel better about the cycle? If your doctor doesn't prescribe it, don't put yourself on bed rest just in case.

Research says your odds of success will be better with regular activity. Many women experience spotting soon after their embryo transfer - around the time an embryo would be implanting if it is going to do so. This often shows as a brownish discharge or a small amount of fresh blood. Some women can experience very heavy bleeding, but still have an ongoing pregnancy depending on where the bleeding is coming from and what it is caused by.

Sore or Swollen Breasts Your breasts can feel very sore and swollen, particularly after taking FSH injections as they will elevate your hormone levels, particularly progesterone. Everyone has different reactions to these hormones - some women feel no different but are pregnant and others do have swollen breasts and unfortunately are not pregnant.

After embryo transfer if the embryo implants, more hormones are produced to support the pregnancy. This can cause the ovaries to remain very active on top of their already swollen state and this can increase your feeling of bloating.

Bloating can occur whether the embryo implants or not, so if you experience bloating and you are feeling uncomfortable then you may want to contact your nursing team. However, bloating will not affect your embryo and its chances of implanting. As with most things in fertility treatment there are very few black and white situations and many grey areas when it comes to what women experience during the 2WW.

All of these women may or may not be pregnant. Disclaimer: Please note that this is a Genea Group blog and as such information may not be relevant for all clinics. Triggered by the hormone progesterone, it is definitely something many women experience during this phase.

Nausea: Hormonal changes are one of the reasons for pregnancy-related nausea. But if you are trying for a baby and feel nauseated during the two-week wait phase, then it could be a good sign of pregnancy. Spotting: As soon as the egg is fertilized it begins to develop and move along to implant itself in the uterus.

Implantation bleeding , also known as spotting, can occur even before you can see blue signs on your pregnancy test. Sensitivity to smell: Most pregnant women experience a change in their sense of smell during pregnancy and it can begin as early as two-week wait phase. Estrogen sensitizes the nostrils to even the faintest odour.

It also aggravates morning sickness. Mood swings: This is something all pregnant women experience. Driven by hormonal changes, one moment you may giggle and in the other moment, you may cry for no apparent reason. Irritability is also quite normal and no amount of discussions with anybody can help.

Mood swings are common during pregnancy and PMS, but many women consider them as one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. It can be roughly measured with a basal thermometer soon after waking up from sleep or just before performing any physical activity. Back pain: Conception can immediately put your body into pregnancy mode and you can begin to feel the differences.

Your body will prepare itself for some major physical changes that will happen in your uterus to accommodate the baby. If you experience back pain out of the blue during your 2WW, it could be a sign that you are pregnant. Vivid dreams: When a woman is pregnant, she may tend to sleep more and much of her underlying thoughts and feelings manifest themselves as strange but vivid dreams.

Constipation: Constipation is common among pregnant women and you can expect it in your two weeks wait period. If you are waiting to hear the good news, even being constipated may feel wonderful, as it is one of the symptoms of pregnancy.

However, it may trouble you throughout your pregnancy. To combat this problem, drink plenty of water and eat fibre-rich foods.

Food aversions: Some foods can make you nauseous while you may desperately crave for others. Although you may not have food aversions until you are five weeks pregnant, if you crave or have aversions for certain foods during your two-week wait, it could be a sign of pregnancy.

Frequent urination: Frequent urination is a good sign of pregnancy as it starts just days after conception. This new urge can begin within days due to the pregnancy hormone hCG. The hormone triggers an increase in the blood supply to the uterine wall to nourish the developing embryo.

It also increases blood flow to the kidneys to flush out waste from both the mother and baby. Fatigue is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy and within days of conception, you may feel fatigued.
